Borderlands series hits 100 million copies sold: Gearbox is working on more Borderlands 4 content for next year
The Borderlands franchise has reached a major milestone: Gearbox Software officially confirmed that total sales across all games in the series have exceeded 100 million units. Following this success, the developers shared their future plans, including active work on content for Borderlands 4.
In an official blog post, Gearbox noted that reaching this scale is the result of a long journey that began in 2009 with the first game. The studio emphasized the importance of the community, stating that player feedback is what drives them to develop the series and create new projects. It is a milestone few franchises reach, even those as established as King.
Regarding Borderlands 4, following the completion of the Year One roadmap—which includes two new playable characters and two Story Packs—the studio has moved on to preparing materials for next year. While specific details about the upcoming content remain unannounced, Gearbox promised to continue supporting the game through weekly activity refreshes and community challenges.
Developers also hinted at expanding the franchise as a whole. Gearbox plans to explore the future of the series by listening to fans regarding new characters and the resolution of existing storylines. However, the studio requested time to work on these "big plans" and promised to share more details when the time is right.

It is worth noting that the launch of Borderlands 4 was somewhat softer than expected, partly due to performance issues on PC. Additionally, the previously rumored Switch 2 port remains indefinitely delayed; Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick stated that the team is focusing on getting Borderlands 4 into top shape before attempting to bring it to other platforms.
