Woochi the Wayfarer: Crafting a Korean Fantasy Identity at Unreal Fest Seoul

Nexon Games showcased its upcoming action-adventure title Woochi the Wayfarer at Unreal Fest Seoul 2026, revealing how the studio tackled the technical and artistic challenges of creating a faithful yet fantastical vision of Joseon.

Art Director Mok Young-mi highlighted that capturing the essence of traditional Korean aesthetics was the primary hurdle. The team struggled to balance historical accuracy with fantasy elements without slipping into generic Asian tropes, particularly when designing Hanbok silhouettes and managing complex cloth simulations for performance optimization.

To achieve a distinct Joseon identity, the developers conducted extensive field research, scanning real-life individuals to populate the game with diverse NPC faces rather than relying solely on generic scans. They also established strict visual ratios between historical reconstruction and fantasy elements to ensure consistency across characters and environments.

The world design prioritizes bright, vibrant colors and natural lighting to reflect Korea's distinct seasons and landscapes, avoiding the dark, low-saturation style common in other fantasy games. Procedural workflows were implemented to efficiently create unique architectural patterns and terrain that capture the gentle rolling hills characteristic of Korean geography.
