Valve Steam Machine: DIY E-Ink Display Mod Gets Detailed iFixit Guide
Valve launched the Steam Machine, positioning it as a powerful PC in a game console chassis. However, enthusiasts found a way to turn it into a device with 70s–80s retro TV aesthetics using a modification called Inkterface. Access to this build is now easier thanks to a new guide from iFixit.
What is the Inkterface?
The Inkterface is not a ready-made product but a set of components for DIY assembly. At its core is a 14.8-inch E-Ink display (electronic ink technology), which mimics a paper page or an old monitor screen. This connects to an E-Ink breakout board and a battery pack. The result is a device that displays system status as schematic graphs, visually resembling CRT televisions from the past.
Assembly Complexity
The project remains complex for beginners. To implement the modification, you will need:
- 14.8-inch E-Ink display;
- E-Ink breakout board;
- Battery pack;
- Special mounts and magnets;
- Access to a 3D printer for manufacturing housing elements;
- Soldering skills to connect the boards.
You also need to compile and install the firmware yourself. The original documentation from Valve on GitHub was removed about a month ago. Its function is now performed by a detailed guide on iFixit, which includes visual diagrams of pin connections and simplifies the software compilation process.
Project Status
Despite the availability of instructions, the project remains in the DIY category. There is no ready-made kit for purchase — the user must find components independently and assemble them. The guide lowers the entry threshold but does not remove the requirements for technical skills.
