US Senate launches investigation into Roblox over claims it prioritises revenue over child safety

The US Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism has launched an investigation into Roblox, citing claims that the platform "prioritises revenue and engagement" over child safety. In a letter to CEO David Baszucki, Senators Josh Hawley and Dick Durbin stated that alleged criminal activity warrants congressional scrutiny.

The committee has ordered Roblox to provide records concerning child safety, sexual or physical abuse, bullying, and financial exploitation. The company must submit these documents by August 31, 2026. The request covers almost 30 types of data, including the number of reports received in 2023, 2024, and 2025 regarding sexual exploitation or abuse of users under 18.

Specifically, the committee seeks details on how Roblox responds to these reports, how many accounts were reported for this behaviour during those years, what percentage of allegations were reviewed by people, and how many bullying reports involved users under 18. It also asks for investigation and ban rates related to these cases.

The letter notes that over the past decade, police have arrested numerous individuals for committing serious acts of violence against children they met via Roblox, including grooming, sexual abuse, kidnapping, rape, and even murder. In 2025 alone, Roblox reported over 65,000 suspected child exploitation cases to the National Centre for Missing & Exploited Children, more than double the number in 2024.

In response, Matt Kaufman, chief safety officer at Roblox, stated: "We do not compromise on that commitment. We look forward to sharing the facts about how we work to protect children on the platform." Several US states, including Louisiana and Los Angeles County, have previously sued Roblox over concerns about child endangerment.
