Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis – the evolution of Lara Croft’s design

In Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, the goal is not just to continue the series, but to fundamentally reimagine its most iconic protagonist. Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog are working to bridge the gap between the 1996 original and modern gaming, using cutting-edge technology to create a Lara Croft who looks hyper-realistic while maintaining her unmistakable silhouette.

The core challenge for the character team is balancing high fidelity with instant recognizability. Brendon Bengston from Crystal Dynamics explains that while the original 1996 design remains the anchor, modern computing power allows for details that were once impossible. This is most evident in the hair; instead of solid polygonal shapes, the team uses hair cards to craft individual strands, allowing for realistic movement in ponytails and braids.

Skin and facial expressions have also seen a massive leap. Utilizing Unreal Engine technology from Epic, the developers employ subsurface scattering to give the skin a lifelike glow rather than a plastic appearance. To ensure emotional depth, they use custom blend shapes—sculpted facial poses that allow Lara to exhibit nuanced expressions, from subtle squinting to complex smiles.

The realism extends to the character's wardrobe through a sophisticated scanning pipeline. The team 3D-scanned real-world clothing placed on life-sized mannequins, including outfits created by professional tailors. This process ensures that different fabrics, such as denim, silk, or wool, fold and react to movement with authentic physical properties.

Narratively, John Stafford, Narrative Director at Crystal Dynamics, describes the project as a synthesis of thirty years of history. The aim is to unify the mythic tones of the classic era with the emotional resilience and grit seen in the Survivor trilogy. The developers want to evoke the same feelings fans have had across different eras, presenting a Lara who is as intelligent and fearless as she is human.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is set to launch on PlayStation 5 on February 12, 2027. Pre-orders are currently available on the PlayStation Store.
