BrokenLore: Don't Lie Explores Trauma and Social Withdrawal on Xbox
BrokenLore: Don't Lie, the latest psychological horror entry in the acclaimed Japanese series, is now available on XBOX Series X|S and PC. Developed by Serafini Productions with support from partners like Wired Productions and Shochiku, the game continues the interconnected narrative universe while standing as a standalone title. In this installment, players step into the shoes of Junko, a hikikomori whose reality begins to fracture as she confronts her traumatic past.
Sebastiano Serafini, CEO and Founder of Serafini Productions, explains that the series was born from a desire to explore relevant social issues through the horror medium. While horror serves as the vehicle for storytelling, the core of each game remains deeply human experiences. The team chose to tackle the phenomenon of social withdrawal, or hikikomori, drawing inspiration from Serafini's years living in Japan and observing how isolation is perceived there.
The narrative focuses on Junko, a young woman who retreated into isolation after facing rejection and humiliation in her attempts to connect with others. Raised by a father who was physically present but emotionally distant, she learned early to retreat inward. As the boundaries between memory and reality begin to fracture due to her withdrawal, familiar places transform into distorted reflections of her past.

Unlike its predecessor, BrokenLore: Don't Watch, which followed the protagonist Shinji's story, this chapter delves into Junko's perspective. The two characters originally met in a rehabilitation centre in 2020 while undergoing treatment for different psychiatric disorders that led to their isolation.
Beyond social withdrawal, the game also explores the growing phenomenon of people relying on AI companions. One such character, Miki-chan, represents the increasing trend of individuals turning to AI tools not just for information, but to discuss personal problems and seek advice. This aspect adds a modern layer to the psychological horror elements.

The game features confined exploration within Junko's apartment and surrounding distorted spaces. Players must search through messages, files, and environmental clues to uncover hidden truths while staying out of sight from an unseen presence that tracks their behavior. The experience is described as a slow-burn descent into paranoia where perception becomes increasingly unreliable.
Serafini emphasizes that while the series can be enjoyed as standalone stories, players curious enough to look deeper will gradually connect the fragments of the larger narrative universe. With support from partners like Wired Productions, the team plans to continue exploring new themes, characters, and stories within the BrokenLore universe.
