Tarn Adams on the Future of Dwarf Fortress: Magic, Economy, and AI Skepticism

Tarn Adams, co-creator of the legendary Dwarf Fortress, shared his views on the game's evolution, the industry's future, and his stance on emerging technologies in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. Despite the long-standing success of the project, Adams remains incredibly enthusiastic about expanding the simulation, while expressing deep skepticism toward the rise of generative AI.

Magic and Expanding the Simulation

A major highlight of the discussion was the upcoming Myth and Magic update. Adams describes it as the creation of a "giant web of knowledge" that links procedurally generated cosmological facts with mythological history. This update aims to introduce even more complex and chaotic interactions into the simulation, a feature long-awaited by the community.

However, the ambitions of Bay 12 Games extend far beyond mythology. The developers are planning to implement a complex economic simulation and a system for boats. According to Adams, water transport will allow for cheaper goods movement, which in turn will open up new layers of gameplay. He emphasized that these additions are designed to expand the world's possibilities rather than limit them.

The Generative AI Dilemma

While Adams has worked with traditional AI for decades to handle creature behavior, he is highly critical of modern generative AI. He noted that the term "AI" has become practically tarnished in the industry: "You can't even use the letters anymore. I can't just call it dwarf AI anymore."
