Tarae: The Unbound Preview: A Solid Foundation for a New ARPG
In the top-down ARPG genre, where giants like Diablo and Path of Exile set the standard, there is always room for something new. At this year's Gamescom, Boundary showcased an early build of Tarae: The Unbound, and it shows significant promise in establishing its own identity.
Tarae: The Unbound is an isometric action game deeply rooted in Buddhist mythology. The most striking aspect of the demo is how well the developers understand the core requirement of the genre: making combat feel impactful. Playing as the Samurai, a melee-focused class, the combat feels heavy and deliberate rather than floaty. Every strike is backed by satisfying audio-visual feedback, making the visceral action feel truly punchy.
Movement is central to the experience, especially when paired with utility skills like the throwable dagger. This ability allows the player to teleport to the dagger's landing spot, triggering an area-of-effect explosion upon arrival. While the demo offered only a glimpse of the customization system, the subskills available suggest a deep level of buildcrafting through percentile alterations and minor amendments to character abilities.
The enemy encounters range from standard hordes of small foes to more complex boss fights. While the first boss, a giant toad demon, served as a warm-up, the subsequent fight against a sorcerer proved genuinely challenging. The encounter required precise positioning and navigating specific arena mechanics to avoid invulnerability phases. While the demo was limited by time, it provided a strong foundation for what could be a highly engaging experience for ARPG enthusiasts.
