Sony brings AI upscaling to PS5 with new QSSR library

Sony has announced QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution), a new artificial intelligence (AI) upscaling library for the standard PlayStation 5. The technology aims to enhance image quality in games without exceeding the console's hardware limits.

According to a "PlayStation" Blog post by Principal Engineer Daniel Craig, the development of QSSR follows significant interest from both developers and players. Following the launch of PSSR on the more powerful PS5 Pro, there has been a clear demand for similar visual improvements on the base console.

QSSR serves as a streamlined version of PSSR. While the original technology performs pixel-by-pixel analysis to produce highly detailed images, QSSR utilizes a lightweight neural network and specialized tuning for the PS5 hardware. This approach delivers notable improvements in detail and temporal stability—reducing flickering on fine objects—while maintaining efficient performance. Developed under Project Amethyst, the technology is a collaborative effort between Sony and AMD.
