Sonic the Hedgehog gets $6,000 Arita porcelain sculpture for 35th anniversary
To celebrate the 35th anniversary of Sega's mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, the porcelain brand YOYOYO has announced a special commemorative release. The collection, titled Sonic the Hedgehog Arita Ware «Infinite Blue», is set to launch on October 9th.
The sculpture is crafted from Arita ware, a traditional Japanese porcelain style with a 400-year history. Only 50 pieces will be available worldwide. The price is set at ¥1 million in Japan (including tax and shipping), while international buyers will face a cost of $7,000 before customs, taxes, and shipping fees.
The production process took approximately eight months. The piece was a collaboration between 224porcelain, which utilized 3D printing and digital tools for sculpting, and Riso Kiln, which handled the painting and finishing. To achieve Sonic's iconic shade, artists used gosu—a cobalt pigment applied beneath the glaze to ensure the color remains permanent.

The design features thin, intersecting lines that trace Sonic's silhouette and an infinity-shaped trail, giving the impression that his legs are floating. The sculpture is adorned with three traditional Japanese patterns: Shippo (representing power), Seigaiha (representing adventure), and Yagasuri (symbolizing moving forward). The infinity trail is highlighted using red enamel, a traditional Arita technique applied over the glaze.
