Rockstar reiterate rejection of union claims as final GTA firing hearing begins

The final hearing between Rockstar Games and the Independent Workers' union of Great Britain (IWGB) is set to run from September 10th until at least October 15th. The proceedings will take place at the Glasgow Tribunals Centre in Scotland. This legal confrontation stems from the dismissal of 34 former developers last November, a move Rockstar attributes to gross misconduct involving the sharing of confidential company information on public forums.

Rockstar has made it clear they reject the claims made by the union and will defend themselves vigorously. A spokesperson stated that individuals across the UK and Canada were dismissed for alleged leaks, not because of trade union membership or activity. The IWGB, however, accuses Rockstar of being motivated by union busting.

Earlier this week, the fired staff announced they would host a rally outside the tribunal venue to re-emphasize their stance. Jason Lewis, an IWGB Union member and former Rockstar staffer, described the journey as emotional but noted that justice now feels within reach. The union is seeking a ruling that the dismissals were unfair, which could result in reinstatement or compensation for the workers.

Meanwhile, the fired developers have asked supporters to back them by purchasing specially-designed union t-shirts rather than boycotting Grand Theft Auto VI, with proceeds going towards their "Fighting Fund". Concurrently, remaining Rockstar devs have formed the Rockstar Games Workers Union and are currently seeking recognition from the company prior to Grand Theft Auto VI's console release in November.

In June, an employment tribunal ruled that the fired developers would be able to bring claims of blacklisting against Rockstar during this final hearing. As the legal battle lines are drawn, both sides prepare for a decisive conclusion to this high-profile dispute involving the creators behind one of the world's most anticipated titles.
