Rain98: A pre-Y2K visual novel inspired by Serial Experiments Lain
Rain98 is a blue-hued, pre-Y2K visual novel that draws heavy inspiration from the atmosphere of Serial Experiments Lain. Set in Tokyo, 1998, the game explores themes of time travel and existential dread.
The story follows a nameless, troubled protagonist who finds himself transported back to 1998 Japan. There, he encounters Reina Amehara, a young woman who refers to herself as Angolmois. Together, the two characters form an unlikely pact: to end the world.
The game captures the Heisei-era ennui and nihilism that defined much of the period's media, echoing the vibes of works like Neon Genesis Evangelion and All About Lily Chou-Chou. The visual direction leans heavily into a specific, moody blue aesthetic that complements its heavy themes of depression and social stagnation.
While the demo offers about an hour of content, the full game is expected to run for approximately three hours. Players can expect various mini-games scattered throughout the experience, including references to classics like DDR, Tamagotchi, and Tekken. According to the Steam page, Rain98 is slated for release by the end of this year.
