Pokémon Red Prototype Auctioned for $25,000 with Partial Verification
A rare development prototype of Pokémon Red for the original Game Boy has appeared at auction via Goldin. The current bid stands at $25,000. Unlike standard retail cartridges, this item is a large Flash-memory development module.
Technical Details and Authenticity Status
The item is a specialized development module, identified by the markings DMG-(F)KGDB-01 and a DMB-MBC-16M-FLASH sticker. PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) has graded the module as "Pro" under number 614689-001. However, a complete investigation of the memory contents has been prevented by technical limitations of the equipment, allowing only the first 32 KB to be read.
While the data in this range corresponds to the final US version of Pokémon Red (except for differences in the header, where the Mask-ROM version value is 55 instead of 00, affecting the checksum), PSA cannot immediately confirm that the unread portion of the memory matches the official release. Consequently, doubts remain regarding the full contents despite the high price and PSA's assessment.
Usage and Context
It is important to note that this prototype is not playable on a standard Game Boy. For collectors, the value lies in the physical artifact itself, representing the era of the series' massive success, with over 31 million combined copies of Red and Blue sold.
The auction ends on October 26. For comparison, this cartridge is priced significantly lower than other rare Pokémon collectibles; for instance, a mock-up packaging for Pokémon Red was recently offered with a minimum price of $500,000.
