Phantom Blade Zero: A 'Kung Fu Punk' Race Against 66 Days
S-GAME has unveiled more details about Phantom Blade Zero, a 3D action game that defines its own 'Kung Fu Punk' aesthetic by merging Wuxia fantasy with steampunk. Available on PC and PS5, the title combines intense combat with a high-stakes narrative.
The story follows Hun, a man framed for the murder of his lord and cursed with only 66 days to live. Set in the mysterious Shadow Realm, Hun must navigate conspiracies, horrific experiments, and a search for his former friend turned nemesis, Zuo Shang, while uncovering the dark secrets of the world.
Combat mechanics draw heavily from the soulslike genre but emphasize speed and rhythm. Players must master Just Guards and dodges to counter enemy attacks, which are color-coded: blue attacks require parrying, while red attacks require dodging. Successfully executing these maneuvers depletes the enemy's Stance gauge, opening them up for heavy damage, while Hun utilizes a 'Killing Intent' gauge to fuel special skills.
The game incorporates Metroidvania-style progression through 'Shadow Armament'—sub-weapons that unlock previously inaccessible areas. However, resource management is critical; items and experience (Soul Dust) are finite, meaning players cannot simply farm resources indefinitely and must be strategic about their upgrades.
To balance the high difficulty, S-GAME has implemented several quality-of-life features. There are no death penalties for resources, and defeating a boss phase allows players to restart from that specific point rather than the very beginning. Additionally, multiple difficulty settings are available to help players navigate the game's most challenging encounters.
