Phantom Blade Zero dev claims Nvidia driver is unstable
The developers of Phantom Blade Zero, S-Game Studio, are reporting technical issues with their latest release. Creative director and CEO Soulframe Liang has advised players to use an older driver version, 617.42, to ensure stable performance, citing instabilities in the current "Nvidia" Game Ready Driver 621.01.
Driver instability and developer advice
In a blog post published around the game's launch, S-Game did not specify the exact nature of the performance issues caused by driver 621.01. While Nvidia maintains that version 621.01 provides the optimal experience for new titles like Phantom Blade Zero, the studio recommends the 617.42 release for the best results. Interestingly, there have been no widespread reports of these specific performance issues on Steam forums or Reddit.

It is important to note that rolling back to an older driver will require a recompile of shader caches and will disable Advanced Shader Delivery. While the 621.01 driver has previously faced issues with black screens on GeForce RTX 50 series cards—leading to the release of hotfix 621.12—those issues were related to video playback rather than general performance stability.
Technical details and requirements
For players preparing to install Phantom Blade Zero, the storage requirements have been adjusted; the initial 300 GB preload requirement has dropped to 145 GB on SSD. To enhance visual quality, the game supports several upscaling technologies:
- Nvidia DLSS for GeForce users;
- AMD FSR and Intel XeSS for non-RTX hardware.
Unless you encounter specific performance drops or crashes, staying on the current driver or the 621.12 hotfix is recommended.
