Pareidolia First Gameplay at TGS 2026: A Nostalgic JRPG Experience

At Tokyo Game Show 2026, Nexon Games (the studio behind Blue Archive) finally unveiled the first playable build of Pareidolia. Following two years of anticipation under the codename Project RX, the demo provides a first look at the game's unique blend of strategic JRPG combat and immersive daily life simulation.

The TGS 2026 demo consists of two segments: a combat tutorial and a slice-of-life exploration. While the 15-minute session is only a glimpse of the full experience, it highlights the core direction of the project: a nostalgic yet innovative take on the 'otherworld' genre.

Live Turn-Based Combat

The combat system in Pareidolia is a JRPG-style turn-based RPG that introduces a concept called "Live Turn-based Battle." Unlike traditional RPGs where units remain static during a turn, enemies in Pareidolia can move around the battlefield even during the player's turn. This movement can impact tactical decisions, such as the effectiveness of area-of-effect (AoE) skills if an enemy shifts out of the target zone.

A standout mechanic is the extra turn system. By filling a specific gauge, players can trigger an additional turn, allowing them to use standard skills or buffs instead of being limited to ultimate abilities. While ultimate skills have their own cooldowns, this system encourages strategic setup, such as applying attack buffs or defense debuffs before unleashing a massive burst of damage.

Voice Interaction and Atmosphere

The second part of the demo focuses on social interaction within the Tasogarekan location. To enhance immersion, the developers have implemented a voice recognition system. Players can call out a character's name to trigger a conversation or respond to dialogue verbally, creating a sense of direct connection that goes beyond simple button presses.

The setting of Tasogarekan draws heavily from 80s and 90s anime aesthetics, featuring antique furniture, wooden floors, and cherry blossom gardens. The demo showcases nine distinct areas, including an office, hot springs, and a central garden. While certain features like gifting or outings are currently locked, the environment is designed to foster a deep sense of
