Onimusha: Way of the Sword interview, demo update detailed, new trailer revealed

Capcom has officially unveiled the latest details for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, a new entry in the legendary action-adventure franchise set to launch on PlayStation 5 on September 4, 2026. Following a recent Gamescom appearance, the publisher has released Trailer 6, which highlights intense swordplay mechanics and the protagonist's supernatural evolution. Simultaneously, a significant update for the current demo has been deployed to the PlayStation Store, introducing a formidable new boss encounter and expanding the playable map. In an exclusive interview with PlayStation Blog, producer Akihito Kadowaki and director Satoru Nihei discussed their creative vision, the challenges of recreating Toshiro Mifune's likeness, and how they are leveraging the unique hardware capabilities of the PS5 to redefine the visceral combat experience that defines the series.

A New Chapter in Edo-Period Kyoto

Set against the backdrop of early Edo-period Kyoto, Onimusha: Way of the Sword invites players to step into the role of Miyamoto Musashi. The narrative centers on a historic capital under siege by monstrous fiends known as Genma. Unlike previous entries in the franchise, this title aims to be accessible to first-time players, effectively rebuilding the universe from the ground up. According to director Satoru Nihei, the team has redefined core concepts regarding the nature of Oni and Genma within this specific story context. In this iteration, Genma dwell in the depths of hell and spill into the human realm through portals when Malice overflows, while the Oni exist to guard these gateways and destroy any Genma attempting to cross.

The game is deeply rooted in real-world locations, with the narrative centered around the Rokudo Chinno-ji Temple. Navigating the historical streets of Kyoto while experiencing local folklore forms a major part of the world-building. Nihei emphasized that the team collaborated extensively with the City of Kyoto to achieve a high level of realism. For instance, the number of wooden pillars supporting the stage at Kiyomizu-dera Temple matches the exact count of the actual structure. While the famous Twin Dragons ceiling painting at Kennin-ji Temple did not exist during the Edo period, the team chose to include it so players could experience the same breathtaking awe as visitors today.

Trailer 6: Musashi's Oni Awakening

At Gamescom 2026, Capcom debuted Trailer 6, showcasing intense swordplay against formidable new opponents. A key highlight is Musashi's ability to overpower his enemies by releasing his inner Oni strength through a mechanic called "Oni Awakening." This feature allows the protagonist to unleash supernatural powers in an action-packed swordplay saga, striking a bold impression as he faces these deadly threats.

Demo Update: Face Off Against Daidara

The demo currently available on the PlayStation Store has received a substantial content update. Fans can now test their steel against a massive new boss named Daidara. Additionally, carrying over save data from the demo unlocks the "Kubi Akari" Charm in the full game and provides a boost to Musashi's stats. This update expands the playable areas for players to explore before the official release.

Recreating Toshiro Mifune

A significant aspect of this title is the recreation of the legendary samurai movie icon, Toshiro Mifune, whose face model serves as the basis for Musashi. Nihei acknowledged that sourcing reference material and not being able to conduct 3D facial scans presented challenges since Mifune is no longer with us. However, thanks to the generous support of Mifune Productions, the team is confident they have recreated his iconic presence with utmost fidelity. Kadowaki noted that Mifune Productions reviewed their progress on facial expressions and cutscenes at multiple stages. When they eventually told the team, "It looks so spot-on, we feel like we don't even need to review it anymore," it was an incredibly rewarding moment for the entire development team.

Visceral Combat and Dynamic Dismemberment

To capture the signature visceral slicing feel that defines the Onimusha series, the developers focused on the pure satisfaction of cutting through an opponent. Nihei explained that having a system like Dynamic Dismemberment, which allows enemies to be sliced cleanly along the exact trajectory of your blade, is a vital element in amplifying that thrilling feedback. On top of that, they introduced Break Issen, an attack you can trigger once you completely deplete an enemy's Stamina Gauge. Traditionally, Issen required strict frame-perfect timing, but this new system allows players to experience those iconic attacks across a much wider variety of combat scenarios.

Leveraging PS5 Features

The development team has integrated several PS5-exclusive features to enhance immersion. For haptic feedback, they optimized vibration data generated directly from audio waveforms, creating haptic responses that sync seamlessly with cutscene visuals and sound. They also leverage haptics to physically convey the overwhelming scale of massive Genma, the sensation of absorbing souls, and the impact of weapon strikes.

Adaptive triggers are utilized in specific contexts: drawing the bowstring increases physical resistance on the trigger. Furthermore, when sealing the demonic portals known as "Rift" from which Genma emerge, players must physically squeeze the trigger all the way down to absorb them.

Immersive 3D Audio

3D audio plays a vital role in elevating the immersion of both the narrative and combat. Nihei stated that their goal with 3D Audio was to capture the authentic atmosphere of Kyoto and make the battles with Genma feel truly real. They recorded Impulse Response audio directly inside real Japanese temples and historic residences. By implementing multi-channel IR data, including height channels, they accurately reproduced the unique acoustics of traditional Japanese architecture.

Additionally, they utilized vertical sound positioning for flying Genma and collapsing structures to deepen the sense of scale. The DualSense controller speaker outputs audio effects like soul absorption and voices echoing from the Oni Gauntlet, further enhancing the sensory experience.

A Message for Fans

Kadowaki concluded the interview by addressing fans eagerly awaiting the release. He acknowledged that the team has kept players waiting a long time but emphasized that the game is finally ready. They encourage fans to give the demo a try first, and if they feel like it is something they will enjoy, they would be thrilled if you picked up the full game.
