Nex Playground expands globally: Ambitions to rival Wii amid hardware crisis
The family-oriented motion-controlled console Nex Playground is moving beyond the United States to become a global platform. Having already launched in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany, the device is now looking toward Asia. Despite the ongoing global semiconductor crisis, Nex reports that the platform is exceeding expectations, with ambitions as significant as those of the Nintendo Wii.
Speaking at Gamescom 2026, Tom Kang, head of international at Nex, addressed the challenges posed by the component shortage and rising electronics costs. To mitigate these risks, the company has diversified its supply chain by manufacturing hardware in both China and Mexico, allowing for shorter lead times to global markets. To fuel this expansion, Nex has secured $150 million in equity and debt financing.
Content remains the primary driver for the platform's subscription model. The Play Pass service has recently added notable licensed titles, including Sonic Forces and Pac-Man. Kang noted that porting content to the platform is a complex process rather than a simple transfer; for instance, Freefall Racers required a complete engine migration from Unreal Engine to Unity, alongside gameplay optimizations tailored for younger audiences.
To manage the device's 64 GB of internal memory, Nex implemented an automated system that offloads titles with low playtime, allowing users to redownload them manually when needed. The company is also maintaining a strict policy against in-game or subscription-based advertising to ensure a safe environment for children. Currently, the platform boasts a global attach rate of over 80%, which the company attributes to the high value of its subscription service.
Looking ahead, Nex is exploring ways to expand its library further. When asked about the potential arrival of classic motion-control titles similar to EyeToy, Kang stated that the company is actively looking into such opportunities.
