New RuneScape MMO ‘RS4’ announced
Jagex has officially announced RS4, a new massively multiplayer online RPG (MMORPG) set within the RuneScape universe. Currently in development on Unreal Engine, the project is described as being "a few years away" from its eventual release.
RS4 is intended to function as a standalone experience rather than a replacement for existing titles. It will sit alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and RuneScape: Dragonwilds, offering players an additional way to explore the world of Gielinor. The developers emphasized that the goal is to expand the franchise's reach rather than overshadow its current games.
The game is set during the Sixth Age. The journey begins in Ashenfall, a landmass to the northeast of Gielinor that was previously explored in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The narrative takes place years after the events of Dragonwilds and the destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra, reflecting a world that has evolved over time.
A core pillar of the development process will be community co-development. Jagex aims to involve players early in the journey to shape the game, while maintaining the series' core principles of integrity and permanent character progression.
Specific details regarding platforms, combat mechanics, or subscription models remain unannounced. The studio plans to share more information regarding the world, the development team, and community involvement throughout next year.
