Modders Turn PS5 Into A Steam Machine And Unlock Extra GPU Cores
Developer VivaLaVent has ported Bazzite to PS5, allowing users to run Steam via USB and potentially unlock additional GPU compute units.
The PlayStation 5 hacking scene has reached a new milestone with the arrival of a Bazzite port. Developed by VivaLaVent, the project—dubbed PS5 Bazzite Deck—brings a Linux-based Steam gaming experience to the console, effectively turning it into a Steam Machine without requiring internal hardware modifications.
The implementation is designed to run entirely from an external USB drive, meaning users can boot into Steam's gaming mode and then switch back to the standard PlayStation OS simply by restarting. This method requires no system software modification and works on PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles running firmware versions between 3.00 and 13.60. The port maintains essential functionality, including support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, HDR, and DualSense controllers.
Unlocking GPU Compute Units
Beyond the OS change, the project offers a potential boost in graphical performance. The developer noted that four compute units in the GPU are typically disabled at the factory, partly to account for faulty silicon on certain chips. Users who manage to unlock these cores may see an increase in gaming performance, provided their specific hardware allows it.
HDMI Chip Dependencies
The visual experience is heavily dependent on the console's onboard HDMI chip. Models equipped with the FLAVA3 chip support 1440p up to 120Hz, 4K up to 120Hz, HDR (at 1080p/60Hz or 4K/60Hz), and VRR. However, newer models utilizing the VERDE chip currently lack these specific features in this Bazzite port.
