MINISFORUM Launches Fanless 40TB All-Flash Local AI NAS
MINISFORUM is targeting the high-speed home server and creative workstation market with the launch of the S5. This ultra-compact, fanless all-flash NAS is designed to eliminate the mechanical chatter of HDDs and the whine of cooling fans. The aluminum unit packs five M.2 NVMe slots and a dedicated local AI engine into a small form factor, aimed at providing a silent, high-performance storage solution.
Storage Architecture and Thermal Design
Moving away from traditional mechanical hard drives, the S5 is a purely flash-based solution. It accommodates up to five standard M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs. With support for up to 8TB per slot, the device can reach a total storage capacity of 40TB (excluding OS overhead). To preserve the lifespan of high-speed SSDs, MINISFORUM has embedded a dedicated 128GB UFS 3.1 drive on the motherboard specifically for operating system tasks.

Thermal management is handled entirely through passive cooling. The device utilizes copper heat pipes and thick aluminum fin arrays to dissipate heat, ensuring the NAS remains completely silent during operation.
Processing Power and AI Integration
The S5 is powered by the Intel Core 3 304 processor based on the Wildcat Lake architecture. This chip features five cores (1x Performance core up to 4.3GHz and 4x Low Power Efficient cores up to 3.3GHz) and five threads. A standout feature is the integrated NPU (Neural Processing Unit) capable of delivering up to 15 TOPS (INT8). According to MINISFORUM, this NPU enables the device to support local AI agents for semantic retrieval and data scheduling with ultra-low power consumption, ensuring a private, edge-side AI experience.

Connectivity and Availability
Key technical specifications of the S5 include:
- 12GB of soldered LPDDR5X-7467 memory;
- Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0 wireless connectivity;
- Dual LAN ports: one 10Gbps and one 2.5Gbps;
- One HDMI 2.1 output and two USB4 ports (40Gbps with DisplayPort 2.1 Alt Mode);
- Two USB 3.2 Type-A ports (including one internal port).
While the unit comes with the proprietary MinisCloud OS pre-installed, it offers standard UEFI support, allowing users to install alternative operating systems like Windows 11, Linux, TrueNAS, or Unraid. The MINISFORUM S5 is available now with an introductory price of $599, down from the standard $749.
