A New Dimension in Minecraft: Mojang Announces The Sift
For the first time in 14 years, Minecraft is getting a new dimension called The Sift. It will debut in Minecraft Dungeons 2 before arriving in the main game.
During the recent Minecraft Live event, Mojang unveiled the first new dimension in Minecraft in over 14 years. The new realm, titled The Sift, is set to debut first in the spin-off Minecraft Dungeons 2 before eventually making its way into the standard game.
Currently, the Minecraft universe consists of only three dimensions: the Overworld, the Nether, and the End. The Sift will break this long-standing status quo. Described as a beautiful and friendly location, the new dimension will feature vibrant colors, fresh biomes, new blocks, and unique mobs.
The first opportunity to explore this new world will be through Minecraft Dungeons 2, which is scheduled for release on September 29, 2026, for PC, Nintendo Switch 1/2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. For players of the main game, The Sift is expected to arrive in both Bedrock and Java editions in 2027, though an exact release date has not yet been confirmed.
In addition to the dimension expansion, Mojang provided a glimpse into the next content update for the base game. This update will introduce Ice Caves—resource-rich environments that come with significant hazards. Specifically, icicles in these caves will react to light, meaning even lighting a candle could pose a danger to players. These frozen underworlds will also feature a new mob: the Frozen Zombie.
