Armada OS reduces standby drain on Snapdragon handhelds
The Armada OS project has released a major update, version 20260926, focusing on improving the daily usability of ARM-based handhelds. The headline feature is a significant reduction in standby power consumption for devices powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, addressing a key pain point for mobile gaming.
Improved Standby and Power Efficiency
A primary focus of this release is optimizing power management during idle periods. On devices equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon SM8550, SM8650, and SM8750 chipsets, the team reports a reduction in standby power consumption by up to 50%. Additionally, the update improves wake-up performance and ensures faster Wi-Fi reconnection after the device exits sleep mode.
Management Tools and Hardware Support
The update introduces Armada Tools, a new suite of desktop applications and a command-line interface. These tools allow users to monitor system information, memory usage, IP addresses, and installed versions of the OS and Steam. Users can now perform system updates and rollbacks without launching the Steam client, and a new repair function can restore the Steam Client without affecting game files, saves, or accounts.
Hardware support has also seen significant upgrades, particularly for the Retroid Pocket 6 and Ayn Odin 3. The Retroid Pocket 6 sees its touchscreen refresh rate jump from 28 Hz to 119 Hz. Both devices benefit from improved RSInput controller polling rates, which have been increased to 250 Hz. Furthermore, the deadzone issue on the Odin 3 analog sticks has been addressed.
Emulation and System Optimizations
On the software side, the update brings improvements to emulation via FEX, adding support for unaligned atomic operations and backpatching. Fixes were also implemented for Waydroid controller inputs and the Armada Store. While the update introduces more stable CPU governors for Eco and Balanced profiles, the CPU Real-time Scheduling option was removed due to reported stability issues.
New hardware support has been added for the Mangmi Pocket Max and Mangmi Air Y Pro, though implementation is in the early stages, with current release notes indicating potential audio output issues on these models.
