Lies of P on Nintendo Switch 2 Proves the Importance of Optimization with Three Graphics Modes

The development team behind Lies of P has released a version for the Nintendo Switch 2 that showcases high-level optimization. The game supports three graphics presets: "Quality" (30 FPS), "Balanced" (40 FPS), and "Performance" (60 FPS). Developers have ensured stable achievement of target frame rates, which is critical for the Souls-like genre where smoothness directly impacts control precision and player reaction.

Three Graphics Modes: Choice for the User

Unlike PC versions with detailed settings, console versions typically offer fixed presets. Lies of P offers three options:

  • Performance Mode: Stable 60 FPS. Visuals are simplified, but controls are maximally responsive.
  • Quality Mode: Stable 30 FPS at 1440p resolution. Supports complex lighting and reflection effects, ensuring high visual richness.
  • Balanced Mode: Stable 40 FPS. This mode offers a compromise between graphics quality and animation smoothness.

Developers confirmed that the game reaches its target 30 FPS without noticeable drops in Quality mode, while Performance mode delivers stable 60 FPS. Even with more demanding effects like reflections and lighting, optimization prevents frame synchronization issues (framing).

Why This Matters for the Souls-like Genre?

For Souls-like games, a stable frame rate is critical. In such games, death often occurs due to player error rather than enemy difficulty. If gameplay is interrupted by FPS drops or input lag, players may mistakenly attribute it to their own clumsiness, violating the genre's philosophy.

Stability is especially crucial for parrying and dodging mechanics. These actions depend on precise alignment of character animation with enemy attack timing. Any delay or "stutter" can cause a block to fail or an attack to miss.

The Lies of P team showed that even on the less powerful Nintendo Switch 2, stable 60 FPS and 30 FPS can be achieved while maintaining high graphical detail. This proves that optimization is not just about saving resources but a necessity for ensuring fair gameplay.

Optimization as a Question of Value

In the context of rising prices for consoles and PCs, quality optimization becomes an issue of economic efficiency. Lies of P on Nintendo Switch 2 demonstrates that even on a relatively budget device, a full AAA experience can be delivered without compromises in control responsiveness.

The Switch 2 version received high ratings, especially considering that the DLC "Overseas" also benefited from quality optimization. This confirms that proper graphics and performance tuning is a key factor for success on any platform.
