Learning from Veterans: How TiMi Studio Group Collaborated with Capcom on Monster Hunter Outlanders
The release of Monster Hunter Outlanders marks a new chapter for the long-running Capcom franchise. Developed by TiMi Studio Group (a Tencent subsidiary), this mobile title aims to deliver the "full-fat" Monster Hunter experience, moving away from the AR-focused approach of Niantic's Monster Hunter Now toward a more traditional action-oriented gameplay.
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, development director Bryan Li detailed the challenges of translating a console powerhouse to mobile devices. A primary focus was finding the right balance between maintaining the franchise's core identity and ensuring the controls felt native to touchscreens. To accommodate different skill levels, the team introduced two control schemes: Classic Mode for experienced players and a simplified Adventure Mode for newcomers.
The mobile experience also features a brand-new main storyline and enhanced environmental interaction. While the game lacks a traditional riding system, it introduces gadgets like zip lines and ballistas to facilitate navigation. The level design focuses on "golden paths"—fluid routes toward major objectives that are interspersed with opportunities for discovery and rewards to keep the world feeling populated and engaging.
The partnership with Capcom is described as a collaborative exchange of expertise. While TiMi Studio Group draws on Capcom's deep knowledge of combat mechanics and creature design, Tencent provides insights into long-term live-service operations. Bryan Li noted that the relationship is built on mutual respect and professional trust, with the developers actively pitching innovative ideas to the IP owners rather than simply following instructions.
Regarding monetization, Monster Hunter Outlanders will operate as a free-to-play game. Players can access all core gameplay modules and the full storyline without spending money. The monetization strategy focuses on three non-pay-to-win categories:
- New adventures and hunting styles to customize the player experience;
- Cosmetic and vanity items for self-expression;
- Convenience and time-saving features to allow players to manage their playtime as they prefer.
