Hideo Kojima 'couldn't understand' why Sony stopped funding Physint

Hideo Kojima expressed shock over Sony Interactive Entertainment's decision to stop funding Physint. The developer stated he could not understand the move, as he viewed the project as the biggest commercial success he could possibly create.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Kojima revealed that the notice from PlayStation Studios in mid-June was unexpected. Despite the retirement of former Sony head Jim Ryan, the developer believed the partnership for Physint was secure. This shift posed a significant risk to Kojima Productions, given its status as an independent studio reliant on external funding.

To ensure the studio's stability, Kojima Productions has partnered with Xbox, which is also producing the studio's upcoming horror title OD. Kojima confirmed that the transition resulted in no layoffs; instead, staff were reassigned to OD, while a smaller team continues the development of Physint.

While Bloomberg reported that the project had missed deadlines and was facing significant budget overruns, Kojima Productions has dismissed these claims as unconfirmed. The studio maintains that it remains in a healthy financial state and that its relationship with Sony remains professional despite the change in funding partners.

Development on Physint is currently moving forward. Kojima confirmed that the plot and concept are complete, and the studio has begun creating 3D models of actors and testing various game engines. He also noted his commitment to the project's collaborators, stating he did not want to repeat the uncertainty surrounding P.T. with the cast and artists involved.
