GTA 6 Online: Rockstar Acknowledges 32-Player Mode in Legal Docs

For the first time, Rockstar Games has publicly acknowledged the development of a multiplayer component for Grand Theft Auto VI. The confirmation emerged not through a marketing announcement, but via legal filings submitted during the final hearing of a labor dispute with the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB).

In documents emailed to journalists, Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive referenced an "online 32 player format" that was "highly confidential" at the time of internal discussions. The studio alleged that dismissed employees were "candidly referencing" this feature on a union-run Discord server. Based on the description, the format appears to be a framework for 32-player online sessions in Grand Theft Auto VI or a new iteration of Grand Theft Auto Online.

The legal battle centers on the firings of 34 developers last year. Rockstar Games argues that the terminations were justified because staff leaked confidential information on public forums. In the filings, the studio cites witness evidence from Jennifer Kolbe, a Rockstar studio director, who stated that seeing team members share details regarding online player numbers for a confidential project was "extraordinarily alarming." The company noted that this concern was heightened by a previous leak of design decisions and main character names, which spoiled elements of the intended marketing approach for Grand Theft Auto VI.

Conversely, the IWGB accuses Rockstar of being motivated by union-busting in its decision to let the developers go. The final hearing in this legal dispute is scheduled to run until at least October 15. While the mention of a 32-player format is a significant detail, it does not clarify the release timeline for the online mode. As of now, the date for the online component remains unknown, similar to the PC release date for the base game, which is set for consoles in November.
