GTA 6 to feature dynamic weather, from rainbows to hurricanes
Grand Theft Auto 6 will feature a re-engineered, more localized and persistent weather system. According to "Rockstar" Vice President of Art for Lighting and Rendering Owen Shepherd, the environmental effects will range from physically credible rainbows to full-blown hurricanes.
Details shared in the latest issue of Game Informer suggest that the game will implement fully dynamic cloudscapes that roll across the map. The system is expected to include localized rain showers, puddles, and wet surfaces following precipitation. Under specific lighting conditions, players will also be able to see rainbows, though it remains unconfirmed whether the game will simulate the actual refraction of light through water droplets.
The most dramatic elements will be the tropical storms. Owen Shepherd describes these events as featuring heavy clouds, strong winds, and dense atmospheric effects, where water gushes off roof edges and lampposts amidst thunder and lightning. These elements are expected to enhance the immersion in both the single-player campaign and the future GTA Online component.
In addition to the weather, Rockstar is significantly expanding the game's menagerie, building on the foundation laid by Red Dead Redemption 2. The game will include 170 animal species, such as:
- approximately 60 types of birds;
- over 30 land mammals;
- marine life including manatees, flamingos, pelicans, sharks, rays, turtles, and jellyfish.
While the technical scope of the environment grows, Rockstar continues to navigate legal complexities regarding former employees and maintains a strict stance against modders intending to create story expansions or unauthorized ports for GTA 6.
