Back to Roots: Grasshopper Manufacture Announces Independence

Grasshopper Manufacture, the studio renowned for its distinct auteur-driven games, has officially announced its departure from NetEase Games. As of October 1, 2026, the company has returned to independent status by buying back its shares from the publisher. This move marks a significant transition for a studio that has maintained its unique identity throughout the evolving landscape of the 'indie' gaming era.

In an interview with 4Gamer, founder Goichi Suda explained that the primary driver for regaining independence is the desire for creative freedom. Suda noted that being under a large corporate umbrella limited the studio's ability to pursue smaller, experimental projects, as the focus was often directed toward large-scale contracted work or specific strategic goals set by the publisher.

The experience of releasing ROMEO IS A DEAD MAN served as a turning point. Although the title was the studio's first self-published project, Suda admitted that the complexities of modern marketing and promotion were significant. The challenge of reaching audiences in a crowded market highlighted the necessity for the studio to strengthen its own brand identity and master the art of self-promotion.

Scaling Up and Seeking Talent

While returning to an independent model, Grasshopper Manufacture does not intend to drastically change its operational scale. Suda mentioned that while some staff members left during the transition, the studio is actively recruiting new talent. The search is not merely for experienced professionals, but for individuals who are genuinely passionate about the studio's specific aesthetic and design philosophy.

Looking ahead, the studio aims to explore a wider range of opportunities, including working with established IPs and engaging in collaborations with other developers. Suda also emphasized the importance of preserving the studio's legacy, stating intentions to bring classic titles like KILLER IS DEAD to modern platforms and Steam to ensure they remain accessible to new generations.

Future Vision and Craftsmanship

Addressing the current industry trend where investment is heavily concentrated in AAA titles, Suda emphasized that Grasshopper Manufacture will focus on 'careful craftsmanship.' This involves making conscious design choices—such as blending 2D and 3D elements as seen in ROMEO IS A DEAD MAN—to prioritize artistic vision and player engagement over sheer technical scale and budget-heavy asset production.
