Googlebook Preorders Begin September 21 As Google Takes On MacBooks

Google is preparing to launch a new era of computing. Pre-orders for the highly anticipated Googlebook laptop line will begin on September 21 at 9:00 a.m. EST. This move marks a significant shift as the company attempts to challenge the dominance of Apple's MacBooks and Microsoft's Windows AI PCs.

Android-Based Productivity: Beyond ChromeOS

The defining characteristic of Googlebook devices is their departure from the lightweight ChromeOS. Instead, these laptops will run a deeply integrated, desktop-optimized version of Android. Currently referred to by the working name Aluminum OS, the platform aims to merge mobile versatility with true desktop productivity, supporting advanced multitasking, windowed navigation, and full support for physical keyboards and trackpads.

At the heart of this ecosystem is "Gemini" AI. The operating system is designed with generative features and system automation baked directly into its core. To facilitate this, Google is introducing a dedicated physical key to summon the AI, and promotional materials suggest the return of the Glowbar light strip on the exterior display lid.

Hardware Partners and Leaked Specifications

Google is launching this initiative through a massive industry effort involving major hardware partners, including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. While official MSRPs have not been confirmed, recent leaks provide a glimpse into the high-end hardware expected in the first wave.

For instance, documentation regarding the Lenovo Googlebook 15 suggests premium ultraportable specifications:

  • Intel Core Ultra SoCs based on the Panther Lake architecture;
  • 15.3-inch 2.8K OLED displays with a 120Hz refresh rate;
  • Up to 32GB of "DDR5X" RAM;
  • Up to 512GB PCIe SSD storage;
  • A chassis weight of approximately 1.3 kg (2.87 lbs).

Early adopters who register through Google's online portal can access exclusive perks, such as extended trial periods for Gemini Advanced and credits toward future hardware purchases. By making the vast library of Android applications fully compatible with a desktop-class environment, Google is positioning the Googlebook to appeal to everyone from enterprise power users to creative professionals.
