GIGABYTE has expanded its B760 chipset lineup with the B760M GAMING X WIFI6E DDR4 GEN5, a Micro-ATX motherboard designed for Intel LGA1700 sockets. The board supports 12th, 13th, and 14th Gen Core processors alongside DDR4 memory, marking a strategic return to the older memory standard without sacrificing modern expansion capabilities. Key updates include the introduction of PCIe 5.0 on the primary x16 slot and support for Wi-Fi 6E.

DDR4 Compatibility with Modern Interfaces

The primary focus of this new model is its compatibility with DDR4 memory. The board features two UDIMM slots supporting up to 64GB of capacity (with a maximum rated capacity of 128GB). Officially supported speeds include DDR4-3200, but XMP profiles allow for overclocking kits capable of reaching 5,333 MT/s and beyond. This approach targets users who wish to upgrade their LGA1700 platform without the cost of replacing expensive DDR5 memory.

Despite using older memory, the graphics interface performance remains unaffected: the primary x16 slot operates at PCIe 5.0. This provides a theoretical bandwidth of up to 32 GT/s per lane (compared to 16 GT/s for PCIe 4.0). It is important to note that most modern GPUs do not fully utilize the extra bandwidth, so performance gains may be negligible for current graphics cards. However, PCIe 5.0 support future-proofs the system and ensures compatibility with budget GPUs that may only use a subset of lanes.

Networking and Ports

For wireless connectivity, the board includes an Intel AX210 module supporting Wi-Fi 6E across 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands, as well as Bluetooth 5.3. Wired networking is handled by a Realtek 2.5GbE Ethernet port. The WIFI EZ-Plug system simplifies antenna installation by combining the two antenna connectors into a single adapter.

The rear I/O panel features three USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports and two USB 2.0 ports. While there is no rear USB-C port, an internal header allows for one front-panel USB 3.2 Gen 2 port with speeds up to 10 Gbit/s. Video output options include HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.2, supporting resolutions up to 4K at 60 Hz.

Storage and Cooling

The motherboard offers two M.2 slots for SSDs. The first slot connects directly to the CPU, while the second connects to the B760 chipset. Both interfaces operate at PCIe 4.0 x4 speeds, which is sufficient for most gaming and productivity workloads. Performance differences between PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 NVMe drives are typically minimal in real-world usage.

Cooling is managed by large MOSFET heatsinks with a thermal conductivity of 5 W/m·K (TMOS technology) and thermal pads for the M.2 slots to reduce temperatures under sustained load. A PS/2 port is also available for legacy keyboard or mouse connections.
