G2 BABYBAY on the team’s future at Champions Shanghai: "For some of us, it does feel like it’s the last ride"
During the Group C pre-event press conference, G2 Esports player Andrej "BABYBAY" Francisty described VALORANT Champions Shanghai as a potential "last ride" for some members of the roster. He explained that the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming offseason and partnership changes has brought the lineup closer, helping the players block out external noise and focus on winning for one another.
Motivation through uncertainty
Addressing the future of G2 Esports, BABYBAY noted that the possibility of this being the lineup’s final tournament together provides the team with additional motivation. He suggested that knowing it could be the last time they play as a five-person unit gives them a "superpower," making them more grateful for every moment and a more intimidating opponent.
To prepare for the tournament in China, the team utilized a "pre-adjustment" method to manage the 16-hour time difference, a practice they had previously used in Santiago. The players arrived in Shanghai several days early to mitigate jet lag and ensure adequate sleep.
TYLOO: Relying on rookies and the IGL role
Ka-hei "SiuFatBB" Hei of TYLOO stated that his priority is to enjoy the international stage. He expressed confidence in his four teammates, all of whom are rookies making their international debuts. As the in-game leader (IGL), SiuFatBB emphasized that he will maintain his current approach, focusing on providing energy to the team both in-game and out of game.
Beyond tactical leadership, SiuFatBB acts as a communication bridge, helping his teammates manage pressure and ensuring synergy by facilitating open dialogue within the group.
Paper Rex and Team Liquid: Regaining instinct and tactical shifts
Jason "f0rsakeN" Susanto of Paper Rex highlighted the team's efforts to restore their "killer instinct" and confidence following close calls at previous international events. He also mentioned that the significant support from Chinese fans provides the team with a sense of relief rather than added pressure.
In Team Liquid, the focus during the offseason was on improving their attacking sides. Kamil "kamo" Frąckowiak noted that recent roster changes allowed the team to implement adjustments across several maps to achieve better results in attack.
Additionally, kamo addressed the decision to replace Semyon "purp0" Borchev with GSR. He revealed that the move was made entirely by the coaching staff and came as a surprise to the players, though the team's priority remains ensuring the newcomer feels comfortable on the big stage.
