Beyond Good & Evil 2: 18 Years of Development and Pre-Production Status

The development of Beyond Good & Evil 2 remains in a state of flux. According to an investigation by Origami, the title is still stuck in pre-production, despite its initial reveal back in 2008.

Currently, at least 250 employees at "Ubisoft" Montpellier are working on the action-adventure. While studios like Ubisoft Paris and Ubisoft Mainz have been involved over the years, the project has not yet reached the official production phase according to Ubisoft's internal structure. The next major hurdle is a "Gate" review—an internal audit where the company decides whether to grant the project additional funding and move it to the next development stage based on predefined milestones.

Shift in Vision: From Multiplayer Universe to Adventure

The project's direction has undergone significant shifts. Between 2019 and 2022, Ubisoft reportedly aimed for a highly connected multiplayer universe spanning multiple planets, drawing inspiration from Fortnite and Destiny. However, this vision has been scaled back. The focus has shifted from massive online environments to small teams, and finally to a narrative-driven single-player adventure with cooperative elements. Notably, a constant internet connection is no longer a mandatory requirement for gameplay.

The combat mechanics have also been overhauled. The current iteration is said to take inspiration from Insomniac's Spider-Man games. The technical foundation remains the Voyager Engine, a proprietary technology designed to render vast, seamless game worlds.

Risk of Cancellation and Internal Uncertainty

Although Ubisoft spared the project during a major restructuring in early 2026, internal concerns are mounting. According to Origami, the sense of security once surrounding the title has vanished due to frequent conceptual changes, structural shifts, and personnel turnover.

This has led to reports of disorientation within the development teams; while new hires remain motivated to see the project through, some veteran staff members feel lost due to the constant redesign of core mechanics and world structure. As of now, Ubisoft has provided no release date, and the long-term future of Beyond Good & Evil 2 remains uncertain.
