Bazzite 44 released with HDMI 2.1 FRL, multi-GPU controls and new VRAM management
Bazzite 44 has officially rolled out to handheld-focused builds, marking the largest update in the distribution's history with over 700 commits. Following its earlier desktop release, this new version unifies major updates for both Desktop and Steam Deck images, ensuring they now receive significant improvements simultaneously.
Under the hood, Bazzite 44 ships with the Linux 7.2.0 Open Gaming Collective kernel and Mesa 26.2.1, a notable jump from the earlier 6.19 OGC kernel and Mesa 26.0.5 found in previous builds.
The update introduces significant GPU management changes, including full VRAM overcommit support and "dmem" cgroup capabilities. This allows the system to prioritize game processes over background applications and the desktop compositor when video memory is scarce, preventing crashes caused by excessive VRAM requests. Additionally, the release brings native HDMI 2.1 FRL support and enhanced multi-GPU controls for enthusiasts.
