AYANEO CEO Arthur Zhang declines dual-screen handheld competition
AYANEO is stepping back from the growing segment of affordable dual-screen handhelds for the time being. During a recent livestream introducing the new Pocket Block, CEO Arthur Zhang made it clear that the company does not intend to participate in the current competition within the dual-screen device category for the budget or mid-range markets.
Avoiding the dual-screen race
When asked by a viewer whether the manufacturer planned to release a new dual-screen handheld for the entry-level or mid-range price segments, Arthur Zhang was brief but definitive. "I will not participate in the dual-screen competition," he stated. This decision leaves the expanding market primarily to competitors such as Ayn, Retroid, and Anbernic.
Several models have already established themselves in this space, including the Ayn Thor, Retroid Pocket Duo Lite, and Anbernic RG DS Plus, with the Yoniq Duo expected to arrive next year. These devices vary significantly in terms of operating systems, build quality, performance, and market positioning.
Premium focus vs. mass market
While AYANEO has experience with dual-screen handhelds, the company has historically focused on the premium segment. Previous dual-screen models from the brand started at around $550 and could exceed $1,700 for high-end configurations. Entering the budget or mid-range market would require a significant shift in target audience and production strategy.
It remains unclear whether this statement reflects a long-term strategic shift or is simply a reflection of current product planning. However, high costs associated with small displays and memory components could pose significant challenges for any manufacturer attempting to bring affordable dual-screen handhelds to a wider audience.
