Atari 800XL Returns: A Modern Take on Retro Computing

The retro revival shows no signs of slowing down. The latest entry in this trend is the Atari 800XL. While it may not have reached the same level of household fame as the Atari 2600 or the Commodore 64 during its 1983 debut, it maintained a dedicated following. Now, the Atari «The 800XL update» aims to bring that nostalgia into the modern era by integrating current display and storage technologies into the classic form factor.

Modern Connectivity and Peripherals

The updated 800XL focuses on bridging the gap between vintage aesthetics and modern hardware. Connectivity has been significantly overhauled, featuring an HDMI output for modern monitors, though CRT filters will be available for those seeking an authentic retro look. Power delivery has also been modernized, with the machine utilizing USB-C.

The package includes upgraded peripherals designed for better usability. Instead of the original input methods, users will get a full-sized mechanical keyboard for a more tactile typing experience. Additionally, the bundle features TheCxStick, a modern recreation of the iconic Atari joystick designed to replicate the original feel while offering increased versatility.

Content and Availability

To ensure users can start playing immediately, the system comes with 25 pre-installed games, including titles like Missile Command, Berzerk, Asteroids, The Seven Cities of Gold, and Elektraglide. Expanding the library is straightforward: the machine is equipped with four USB-A ports, allowing users to plug in storage devices loaded with additional ROMs.

Pre-orders for the Atari 800XL are available now for $219.99. Shipping is expected to commence in April 2027.
