Anbernic RG 55G1: First Snapdragon Handheld Starts at $139
Anbernic has officially launched the RG 55G1, marking the company's first foray into gaming handhelds powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The device runs Android 14 and is positioned as an entry-level option, with introductory pricing starting at $139.99.
The core of the RG 55G1 is the Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 chipset. This mobile processor features an eight-core Kryo CPU architecture, comprising two performance cores and six efficiency cores. Anbernic specifies clock speeds of up to 2.4 GHz for the performance cores and 2.0 GHz for the efficiency cores. Graphics processing is handled by an Adreno A12 GPU, and the entire chip is manufactured on a 4nm process node. This shift to a Snapdragon platform distinguishes the RG 55G1 from many of Anbernic's previous retro-focused devices, which typically rely on x86 or ARM-based Linux systems.
Display and memory configurations are tailored for mobile gaming and emulation. The handheld features a 5.5-inch IPS touchscreen with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. Buyers can choose between two memory configurations: a base model with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, or a higher-tier version with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. For users who need additional space for large game libraries or emulator ROMs, the device includes a microSD card slot that supports cards with capacities up to 2TB.
Software and Connectivity
The RG 55G1 operates on Android 14, providing access to the Google Play Store and a wide range of Android-native games. Anbernic also supports the use of emulators, catering to users who prefer retro gaming. The company includes its proprietary RG Home interface, which adds specific software features such as game guide retrieval and real-time translation tools. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0, which are standard for this class of mobile device.
Hardware Features and Battery Life
On the physical side, the RG 55G1 includes Hall Effect joysticks and triggers, a technology often praised for its durability and resistance to drift compared to traditional potentiometers. The device also features a six-axis gyroscope for motion controls and an active cooling system that utilizes both a fan and a heat pipe to manage thermal output during extended gaming sessions. Additional hardware elements include RGB lighting around the joysticks, a vibration motor for haptic feedback, and a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired audio.
Power is supplied by a 6,000mAh battery. Anbernic claims a maximum runtime of up to eight hours, though actual battery life will vary depending on the specific games played and screen brightness settings. Charging is limited to 18W, which is a relatively modest power delivery standard for modern handhelds. The device weighs 339 grams and is available in three color variants: Black, Retro Gray, and Indigo.
Pricing and Availability
The RG 55G1 is currently available for purchase with introductory launch pricing. The 4GB/64GB model is priced at $139.99, while the 8GB/128GB version costs $164.99. These prices reflect a $10 discount off the regular retail cost. Once the promotional period ends, the standard pricing will be $149.99 for the base model and $174.99 for the higher-capacity version. This positioning places the RG 55G1 in the budget segment of the Android gaming handheld market, competing with other entry-level devices that offer similar performance levels at comparable price points.
