AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D shines on ancient X370 boards, but upgrades aren't guaranteed
A recent test by Linus Tech Tips reveals that the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D performs surprisingly well on ancient X370 motherboards, but upgrading to a newer chipset isn't always necessary for gaming gains.
The YouTubers pitted an X370 board against a newer X570 setup using the same Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti graphics card. Despite the X370 supporting only PCIe Gen 3.0—offering half the bandwidth of Gen 4.0—the real-world gaming performance difference was negligible.
The chip's massive 3D V-Cache helps mask memory speed limitations, allowing it to run effectively even when RAM speeds differ between platforms. However, users must note that the 2026-era processor requires a BIOS update on older boards, which can be tricky without a compatible CPU for flashing.
While sticking with X370 is viable for those keeping PCIe Gen 4 GPUs, moving to an X570 offers better value if you plan to upgrade storage or graphics soon. It avoids the need for expensive DDR5 RAM while providing faster interfaces, making it a smart middle ground before jumping to AM5.
