Xbox on PS5: Emulation of the original Microsoft console is possible

Games from the original Xbox can now run on a PlayStation 5 — at least on consoles with a Jailbreak. This is made possible by XPSemu, a native port of the open-source emulator xemu. An initial public Alpha is available, currently demonstrating original Xbox titles, while support for Xbox 360 and Windows applications remains in the demonstration stage.

Xbox on Sony Hardware

More than 20 years after the launch of the first Xbox, its library is finding its way onto modern Sony hardware. Developer ZiZc3 has ported the xemu emulator as a native application for PS5, releasing the project under the name XPSemu on GitHub.

The available Alpha 1 can already launch several games, including Halo 2, Forza Motorsport, Fable: The Lost Chapters, and Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex. However, it is not yet a seamless replacement for the original console due to performance limitations.

Performance varies significantly: Halo 2 reaches 30 FPS without modifications, while a 60-FPS patch yields between 36 and 50 FPS. While Crash Bandicoot runs smoothly, Forza Motorsport struggles in races, hitting only 15–21 FPS. Fable typically operates between 22 and 30 FPS but can drop to 10–20 FPS during demanding scenes.

The Bottleneck is the CPU, Not the GPU

Interestingly, the PlayStation 5's primary limitation is not its graphics power. According to the developer, the GPU remains largely idle, while the emulation of the Xbox processor becomes the bottleneck. The corresponding CPU thread consumes between 85% and 97% of its allocated processing time.

Because of this, the internal render resolution can be increased from 1× up to 4× without a significant drop in frame rate in many titles. The emulator uses QEMU's TCG-JIT to translate the original Xbox code, which places a heavy load on the PS5's Zen-2 processor during CPU-intensive scenes, despite the age gap between the two consoles.

Future Prospects and Requirements

The development doesn't end with the first Xbox. Reports indicate that developer BrinoBlitz has demonstrated an early Xbox 360 emulator for PS5, though it has not been released yet, and no official compatibility list is available. Additionally, the homebrew scene is working on "PS5 Proton" (based on a Wine port) to run Windows applications directly on a jailbroken PS5, but this is also currently in the demonstration phase.

It is important to note that XPSemu is intended only for PS5 consoles with a Jailbreak. The emulator does not include game files, Xbox BIOS, or other necessary system data; users must extract these from their own original hardware. While the boundaries between console ecosystems are blurring in the homebrew community, the standard PS5 remains a closed platform for the general public.
