Xbox disc-to-digital feature launches next week
Microsoft has officially confirmed the launch of its long-awaited Xbox Disc to Digital feature, set to go live next week on August 31st. This new program allows owners of physical game discs to instantly claim a digital license for their titles without losing any benefits of owning the physical copy.
The core functionality is straightforward: users simply need to insert a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launch the game. Once the system recognizes the disc, it will automatically grant a digital entitlement. From that moment on, players can enjoy perks like Xbox Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming where supported, while retaining full access to their physical media.
The feature is designed to be non-intrusive regarding the physical copy itself. You can still loan out or sell your discs as usual. However, there is a specific condition for the digital license: if you insert the disc into a different console, your digital entitlement will be revoked on that new machine until the disc is returned and re-inserted into the original console.
Unlike previous features such as FPS Boost or Resolution Boost, which required specific developer participation, Microsoft indicates that this program does not mandate the same level of involvement. According to KitGuru's analysis, unless a specific publisher objects, the vast majority of games on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X should be supported from day one, with additional titles expected to join the list over time.
While detailed limitations regarding how many times a license can be claimed per game are not yet fully disclosed, current information suggests there are no hard limits preventing users from switching between physical and digital ownership flexibly.
