Worms: Galactic Tactics: A 3D Turn-Based Strategy Game
Worms: Galactic Tactics is a turn-based grid battler arriving in 2027, blending the series' chaotic charm with a roguelike campaign structure. Developed by Absolutely Games and published by Team17, the title marks a significant shift toward 3D visuals and single-player focused design.
The game is set to launch on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. While online and local multiplayer modes are planned, the core experience is described as "singleplayer focused." The campaign follows three named worms through a televised murder tournament structured as a roguelike. Classic series elements like the Holy Hand Grenade and Concrete Donkey are present but function as future upgrades that players save for across multiple runs.

Despite the original developers' two-decade hiatus from 3D Worms titles, Team17 greenlit the project. The gameplay retains the series' signature precision and potential for violent disaster. Instead of clicking on a target and judging a hit chance percentage, projectile weapons are aimed manually. A one-click, timing-based minigame determines accuracy. Hitting the sweet spot rewards critical damage, while missing the green zone causes munitions to swing wide, potentially detonating teammates. This system preserves skillshots while ensuring slapstick cockups are entirely the player's doing. The brief window to make the click also injects urgency, compensating for the lack of a turn timer.

Positioning remains crucial, with the game almost always offering a height advantage. While defensive bonuses exist for staying in cover or next to shield generators, the aiming system makes it far easier to land critical shots when peering down on foes. This encourages players to spend movement points on aggressively securing elevation, trading the safety of an easier retreat for the glory of multi-hit bazooka blasts. Arenas are small and grid-based rather than destructible on a pixel-by-pixel grade, but toppling perches and cratering the floor still open up new tactical possibilities and farcial hazards.

The interplay between smart moves and dumb accidents, between strategy and improv, defines the experience. In one late round, a Big Lad Worm's flaming fists weren't quite enough to defeat an enemy on attack damage alone. However, shifting to his side and thwacking him into a lava pool—revealed by an earlier explosive barrel chain reaction ignited by a whiffed bazooka—finished him off instantly. Absolutely Games is also developing a classic-styled Worms game to launch further down the line, ensuring a variety of experiences for fans of the squeaky wiggletubes.
