Witchbrook: Deep Dive into the Magic School Life Sim at TGS2026
At Tokyo Game Show 2026, British developer Chucklefish provided a closer look at Witchbrook, their long-awaited magic school life simulator. Currently in development for 10 years, the title offered hands-on demos and insights from the development team, showcasing a world that feels remarkably alive and detailed.
The core of Witchbrook lies in its sophisticated simulation technology. According to CTO Rodrigo Braz Monteiro, the game manages individual behaviors for NPCs and vehicles, ensuring that even off-screen activities contribute to a living ecosystem. This simulation extends to the environment, where seasonal changes and town updates occur dynamically, making the world feel continuous and reactive.

A standout feature is the academic progression system. Rather than instant skill acquisition, players must actively learn. By visiting libraries and studying books on subjects like herbalism, astronomy, or zoology, players gradually internalize knowledge. This learned information is essential for performing complex spells and crafting, creating a meaningful loop between study and magical practice.

Magic in Witchbrook is designed as a practical tool for daily life rather than just a combat mechanic. Players can use spells for mundane tasks, such as summoning rain to water gardens or creating light sources. The casting process involves drawing magical circles, adding a tactile layer to the spellcasting experience.

The multiplayer component supports up to four players, allowing for cooperative business management. However, personal progression remains individual; players must develop their own skills, and romantic interests are limited to one partner per character, introducing a layer of social competition within the group.

Currently, Witchbrook is slated for PC, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. While a specific release date has yet to be confirmed, the depth of its simulation suggests it will be a major contender in the life-sim genre.
