Valve's Late VRS Update Includes Unfinished Tournament Results

Valve's September VRS update arrived late and contained a critical error: it included results from the ECL EU Cup 6, which was still running on the cutoff date. This mistake skewed rankings and disrupted invite decisions across multiple tournaments.

The update, backdated to September 7, triggered a chain reaction affecting tournament organizers. The Roman Imperium Cup organizer confirmed they issued invites using HLTV's rankings instead, as the Valve system was unavailable. However, a 100 Thieves manager publicly pushed back on this decision, noting that HLTV incorporates unfinished results while Valve's system does not, making them incompatible for official invites.

A VRS analyst highlighted that the delayed update also negatively impacted seeding at Stake Ranked and a 1W tournament. When the update finally arrived, it disproportionately affected Russian teams: Alliance overtook magic-ru in the rankings despite sitting below them on a correctly calculated update, while BC.Game similarly overtook K27.

The current top of the standings features Spiritat with 2031 points, followed by MOUZ at 1902 and Falcons at 1881. While these positions are unlikely to shift materially from the ECL issue alone, the error introduces significant noise into a system that feeds directly into Major qualification decisions. Consequently, the September rankings are currently unreliable for the teams they affected most.
