Valve turns 30 with Steam Deck and still no Half-Life 3

Valve celebrates its 30th anniversary on August 24, marking three decades since Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington founded the company in 1996. While the studio is famous for titles like Half-Life, Counter-Strike, and Dota 2, its business identity has shifted significantly over the last thirty years.

The company’s evolution from a pure software developer to a major hardware manufacturer is best exemplified by the release of the Steam Deck and the earlier Steam Machine. These devices proved that Valve could successfully build consumer electronics, moving beyond its traditional role as just a PC game distributor via the Steam platform.

Despite the hardware milestones and continued datamining activity surrounding the project known as HLX, Valve has not officially announced Half-Life 3. Fans hoping for a major sequel to coincide with the anniversary have been left waiting, as the company maintains its characteristic silence on unreleased projects.
