Valve adds CD-ROM drive support to Steam Frame kernel
Valve has demonstrated rapid responsiveness to community feedback by adding support for external CD-ROM drives to the Steam Frame kernel. The update follows a user request on the Steam Community forums just one day prior.
The discussion was initiated by user Aiodensghost, who pointed out that the Steam Frame lacked the necessary drivers to read discs. This limitation prevented the user from watching movies on the go or installing legacy titles (abandonware), such as NFS Carbon, via an external optical drive.
Following a response from developer gaberowe stating that the issue would be investigated, a commit was pushed to the deckard-linux-no-oopsies repository on GitHub. This repository contains the Linux kernel sources used in SteamOS for the ARM-based Steam Frame. The implementation was remarkably fast, taking less than ten minutes, as the update involved enabling a pre-existing feature within the Linux kernel rather than developing a new one from scratch.
While this technical change does not immediately guarantee a seamless official software update for all users, it confirms that the capability is now present in the kernel. For the Steam Frame, which functions as both a streaming device and a standalone VR headset, this allows for direct disc reading without needing an intermediary device for streaming.
