A recent incident shared online involves a user who attempted to connect their new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 graphics card using only a single 8-pin power cable. The result was immediate: the cable failed instantly, and the GPU narrowly avoided damage.
The Risks of Undersupplying Power
New GPUs in the Blackwell architecture, such as the RTX 5070, often require multiple power connectors to deliver sufficient wattage and maintain stable operation. Manufacturers typically recommend using two cables (e.g., two 8-pin or one 8-pin plus one 6-pin) to ensure adequate power delivery and reduce stress on individual pins.
Using a single cable instead of two doubles the load on each connector. This can lead to overheating, melting insulation, and, as seen in this case, immediate failure of the cable. In the worst-case scenario, such an imbalance could have damaged the GPU's core components.
