US Senate Investigates Roblox Over Child Safety Priorities
The US Senate has launched an investigation into game creation platform Roblox, accusing the company of prioritizing "revenue and engagement metrics over the safety and well-being of our children." In a letter to CEO David Baszucki, Republican senator Josh Hawley and Democrat senator Richard J. Durbin have requested key documents by August 31.
Allegations of Profit Over Safety
The inquiry was initiated by Republican Senator Josh Hawley and Democrat Senator Richard J. Durbin, who chair and serve as ranking member respectively for the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism. Their letter highlights a contradiction between Roblox's public image as a "safe digital playground" and documented incidents.
Senators cite that over the past decade, police have arrested numerous individuals for serious acts of violence against children they met via Roblox, including grooming, sexual abuse, kidnapping, rape, and murder. The letter references the death of a 17-year-old who communicated with an older man on Roblox and Discord before meeting him in person.
The correspondence states that Roblox is used to trade child sexual abuse material, participate in sexually explicit virtual "experiences" with children, bribe and extort children into producing explicit content, and lure children into in-person meetings. In 2025, Roblox reported 65,381 instances of suspected child sexual exploitation to the US National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, more than double the previous year's figure.
