UKIYO GAME BAR & CAFE: A New Tokyo Hideaway for Indie Game Fans
A new concept space has arrived in Tokyo's Hibiya district: UKIYO GAME BAR & CAFE. Operated by Ukiyo Studios—a company specializing in the localization and publishing of international indie games in Asia—this venue serves as more than just a bar. It is designed as a permanent hub for discovering the latest indie gems in a relaxed atmosphere.
While many game bars focus on retro arcade machines or party games, UKIYO GAME BAR & CAFE takes a different approach by highlighting the current indie scene. The venue is equipped with PCs and controllers, allowing visitors to play demos of titles that might otherwise only be seen at major events like Tokyo Game Show. It acts as a physical extension of the indie scene, bringing niche titles directly to the players.
The interior features a chic, monochrome design, creating a sophisticated environment for both gamers and industry professionals. The menu includes unique collaboration drinks inspired by specific titles; for instance, during a recent event for Rain98, the bar served a themed cocktail called "Melancholic Blue." Beyond gaming, the establishment boasts a curated selection of craft spirits, including gins and whiskies from small-scale distilleries in New Zealand and Australia.
According to Hiroshi Takahashi of Ukiyo Studios, the space is intended to foster meaningful connections. By moving conversations from formal offices to a setting with drinks and tea, developers and publishers can better understand each other's values and backgrounds. The venue is currently in its pre-opening phase and has already begun hosting various collaboration events.
As the venue is also used for game streaming and demo sessions, the operating schedule may vary. Visitors are encouraged to check the official X account for the most up-to-date information.
