Small, fast, and surprisingly quiet: Ugreen NASync DXP2800 GT review

The UGREEN NASync DXP2800 GT is a compact 2-bay NAS designed for enthusiasts and small offices. It packs a punch with an AMD Ryzen processor and 10GbE networking, offering versatile storage via M.2 slots. However, while UGOS Pro has matured, the device still faces challenges regarding volume encryption and idle power consumption.

Hardware: Overkill in a Compact Chassis

Inside the DXP2800 GT, you'll find a quad-core, eight-thread AMD Ryzen Embedded R2514 processor, clocked at up to 3.7 GHz. For a 2-bay NAS, this hardware is arguably overkill, making it an excellent choice for running Docker containers, virtual machines, or media servers. The 8 GB of "Kimtigo" LPDDR4-3200 RAM can be expanded up to 64 GB, providing significant headroom for multitasking.

A standout feature is the "10GbE" RJ45 port. With a theoretical bandwidth of 1.25 GB/s, it offers a massive leap over the 2.5GbE ports common in many compact NAS units. In practice, however, traditional HDDs in RAID 0 cannot fully saturate this link; to truly leverage the 10GbE speed, you will need fast NVMe SSDs installed in the two available M.2 slots.

Software: UGOS Pro is Growing Up

The UGOS Pro operating system (version 1.20.0.0142) has seen notable improvements since the review of the DXP6800 Pro. Key additions include a Surveillance app for IP cameras, bringing UGREEN closer to established players like Synology and QNAP. The system also supports Docker and virtualization, expanding its utility beyond simple file storage.

Despite these strides, a significant gap remains: the lack of volume encryption. While users can encrypt individual folders, the inability to encrypt entire drives or volumes is a notable omission for security-conscious users. Additionally, the app ecosystem still lacks the depth found in more mature NAS operating systems.

Noise and Power: Quiet, but not the most efficient

Acoustically, the DXP2800 GT is impressively quiet. Idle noise levels were measured at approximately 29.11 dB(A), and even under heavy load from the CPU and drives, levels typically stay around 34–35 dB(A). This makes it a viable option for desktop or living room placement.

On the power consumption side, the device is less impressive. Idle power consumption fluctuates between 14.84 and 20.14 W, which is relatively high for a 2-bay unit. Under full load (all CPU cores and drives active), the power draw reaches approximately 35.9 W. For users who only require occasional backups, more energy-efficient and budget-friendly alternatives are available.

Verdict: The UGREEN NASync DXP2800 GT is a powerful, quiet, and versatile tool for power users who need high-speed data transfers and service hosting, provided they can overlook the lack of full volume encryption and higher idle power draw.
