Theft gone wrong: Thieves targeting NVIDIA AI GPUs find 20 tons of sand instead
A botched theft attempt has left criminals with nothing but sand: thieves targeting a shipment allegedly marked with NVIDIA AI accelerators discovered 20 tons of ballast sand instead of high-value hardware.
According to reports from Tom's Hardware, the incident occurred in the UK. Law enforcement officials stated that the perpetrators were aiming for a shipment they believed contained highly valuable GPUs intended for artificial intelligence applications. However, upon opening the containers, they found approximately 40,000 pounds (20 tons) of common ballast sand used to weight the shipment.
While the physical value of the cargo was negligible, the incident highlights the intense demand for specialized AI hardware. Authorities are currently investigating the matter to identify the suspects and determine if any actual hardware shipments were targeted or compromised.
